Overview
A ring is trapped inside a wire cage made of two orthogonal great-circle hoops. A cord connects the ring to an external handle, threading through the cage's windows with a path constraint. To extract the ring, the solver must execute a corkscrew motion at the cage's pole — a simultaneous rotation in two orthogonal planes that cannot be decomposed into sequential single-axis moves. This is the Hopf move, and it trains a genuinely new motor skill.

The two hoops are welded together at their two intersection points (north and south poles), forming a cage with 4 quadrant windows. Each window is approximately a quarter-circle opening.
Setup
Detailed cord path
- One end of the cord is tied to the ring (inside the cage)
- The cord passes through the NE window (from inside to outside)
- The wooden ball is on the cord between the two windows (outside the cage)
- The cord passes back through the SE window (from outside to inside, then immediately out through the same window — or through an adjacent configuration that creates the path constraint)
- The cord exits and connects to the wooden handle
The ball and cord path prevent the cord from being simply pulled straight through one window — the solver cannot bypass the cage geometry by pulling the cord.
Objective
Extract the ring completely from inside the cage to outside the cage. The cord remains attached and threaded through the cage. Nothing is cut or broken.
The Topology
The cage (two orthogonal great circles on S^2) creates a skeleton whose complement has a specific topology. The ring's configuration space — the set of all positions and orientations the ring can occupy inside the cage — is homeomorphic to S^3 (the 3-sphere).
Understanding S^n: Spheres of Every Dimension
The notation S^n means 'the n-dimensional sphere':
- S^1 is a circle — the boundary (edge) of a disk. It's a 1-dimensional curve that loops back on itself.
- S^2 is an ordinary sphere — the surface of a ball. It's a 2-dimensional surface that curves back on itself in 3D space.
- S^3 is the 3-sphere — the 'surface' of a 4-dimensional ball. It's a 3-dimensional space that curves back on itself in 4D.
S^3 is impossible to visualize directly (we live in 3D, so we can't see 4D curvature), but we can understand it by analogy:
- A circle (S^1) is a 1D line that wraps around and closes in 2D
- A sphere (S^2) is a 2D surface that wraps around and closes in 3D
- S^3 is a 3D space that wraps around and closes in 4D
The ring's configuration space inside the cage is homeomorphic to S^3 — every possible position and orientation of the ring corresponds to a point in this 3-sphere.
The solution path corresponds to a fiber of the Hopf map h: S^3 → S^2. The Hopf map is a specific projection from the 3-sphere to the 2-sphere, and its fibers (preimages of points) are circles that wind through S^3 in a characteristic twisted pattern. In physical terms, each fiber corresponds to a motion that combines:
- Rotation about one axis (say, the equatorial hoop's axis)
- Rotation about the orthogonal axis (the polar hoop's axis)
in a 2:1 ratio — one full rotation about one axis for every half rotation about the other. This coupled motion cannot be decomposed into sequential single-axis rotations. It is an essentially coupled motion.
The Hopf Fibration: An Accessible Explanation
The Hopf fibration is a way of filling S^3 entirely with circles (called fibers), where:
- Every point of S^3 lies on exactly one fiber
- Each fiber is linked with every other fiber
- The set of all fibers forms S^2 (each fiber maps to a single point on S^2)
Imagine filling the inside of a ball with intertwined rings, each one threading through all the others, with no tangles or knots — just smooth, linked circles everywhere. That's the Hopf fibration (projected into 3D).
In this puzzle, the solution path traces one of these Hopf fibers. Moving along a fiber requires rotating in two planes simultaneously — this is the corkscrew motion.
The Belt Trick Analogy
Hold a belt by the buckle. Rotate the buckle 360° around the vertical axis. The belt is now twisted — one full twist. You cannot undo this twist by moving the buckle without rotating it.
But here's the surprising part: if you rotate the buckle 360° around the vertical axis AND simultaneously let the belt loop OVER your hand (a second rotation in a perpendicular plane), the belt untwists. This coupled double rotation is related to the Hopf fibration — it's the same principle that governs the corkscrew move in this puzzle.
An even closer analogy: the plate trick (or Dirac's string trick). Hold a plate on your palm. Rotate it 360° — your arm is twisted. But continue rotating in the same direction (another 360°, for 720° total) while letting your arm pass under the plate, and your arm untwists. The rotation and the arm movement are coupled — neither alone works, but together they do. The puzzle's crux move is this same kind of coupled motion.

Solution
Step 1: Disengage from equatorial hoop
The ring starts sitting around the equatorial hoop. Rotate the ring 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the equatorial hoop and no longer encircles it. The ring now sits inside the cage, oriented vertically.
Step 2: Move to the pole
Slide the ring toward the north pole (N), where the two hoops intersect. The ring must navigate between the hoop wires to reach the pole junction.
Step 3: The Hopf Move (crux)
At the pole, the two hoops cross, creating a tight junction. The ring must pass through this junction. This is where the coupled rotation is required:
- Simultaneously rotate the ring around the equatorial hoop's axis (like tilting your wrist) while advancing the ring along the polar hoop's axis (like sliding your hand forward)
- The motion is a corkscrew: the ring spirals through the junction, threading between the two hoop wires
- The rotation and translation must be continuous and coupled — if you try to rotate first and then translate (or vice versa), the ring jams against the hoop wires
- Think of it as threading a nut onto a bolt — the rotation and forward motion happen simultaneously
Step 4: Exit through window
After passing through the pole junction, the ring is in a new quadrant. Orient it to fit through the adjacent window opening and slide it out of the cage.
Why It's Tricky
Motor planning decomposition. Humans naturally plan spatial movements as sequences of single-axis rotations and translations: rotate, then move, then rotate again. The Hopf move requires simultaneous coupled motion — rotation and translation in a fixed ratio. This is not how our motor planning system generates movements. Solvers will attempt hundreds of sequential move combinations (rotate left, push forward, rotate right, push up, ...) and fail, because no sequence of discrete single-axis moves navigates the junction.
The solution must be felt, not thought. Unlike every other puzzle in the series, the solution to the crux move cannot be fully communicated verbally. It must be discovered through physical experimentation. The corkscrew motion, once found, is immediately recognizable — "oh, it just spirals through" — but the verbal description ("rotate while advancing in a 2:1 ratio") does not translate into motor execution for most people.
Difficulty is in execution, not conception. Even after being told exactly what to do, most solvers cannot execute the Hopf move on their first several attempts. The puzzle trains a genuinely new motor skill. This makes it unique in the series: every other puzzle has a conceptual "aha!" moment after which execution is trivial. This puzzle has a conceptual insight (coupled rotation) that is necessary but not sufficient — the physical skill must also be developed.
The cage looks simple. Two hoops welded together — it doesn't look like it should be hard. The visual simplicity of the cage belies the topological complexity of the configuration space inside it.
Some motions cannot be decomposed into sequential steps. Coupled rotations (the physical manifestation of fiber bundle structure) require a fundamentally different approach to spatial manipulation. Topology is not just about what configurations are possible — it also constrains how you move between them.
Construction Notes
Critical: Cage fabrication
- The two hoops must be welded at precisely 90 degrees at both poles. Use a jig: two V-blocks at right angles holding the hoops during welding.
- Grind all welds flush. Any bump at the pole junction will catch the ring and make the Hopf move impossible. This is the most critical fabrication step in the entire series.
- Polish the pole junctions with progressively finer sandpaper (220 → 400 → 800 grit) until the ring slides over them without catching.
Ring sizing
The ring must be large enough to pass over the hoop wire but small enough that it cannot pass diagonally through a window without rotating:
- Ring ID: ~47mm (55mm OD - 2×4mm wire)
- Hoop wire: 4mm → clearance on each side when ring encircles hoop: (47 - 4) / 2 = 21.5mm per side
- Window opening: approximately 55mm × 55mm (quarter-circle of 120mm diameter)
- The ring OD (55mm) is close to the window width, so the ring can only pass through when oriented parallel to the window plane — it cannot tumble through at an arbitrary angle
Tolerance tuning: For harder difficulty, use a 50mm OD ring (less clearance). For easier difficulty, use a 60mm OD ring. Prototype with several ring sizes.
Path constraint (cord and ball)
The wooden ball must prevent the cord from being pulled straight through one window:
- Option A: Ball (25mm) on a short rigid T-bar (two 15mm arms perpendicular to cord) — the T-bar catches on hoop wires
- Option B: Thread cord through two non-adjacent windows with a ball between them on the outside — the ball cannot fit through both windows in sequence
- Test thoroughly; the path constraint must prevent bypass without making the puzzle physically impossible
Handle
- A simple hardwood bar with a hole drilled through one end for the cord
- Cord tied through with a stopper knot
- The handle provides something to hold while manipulating the ring with the other hand
Prototype extensively
This is the hardest puzzle in the series to get right. The clearances between the ring, the hoop wires, and the window openings determine whether the puzzle is:
- Too easy: Ring passes through windows at any angle (ring too small)
- Correct: Ring requires the Hopf move at the pole junction (ring properly sized)
- Impossible: Ring cannot physically execute the Hopf move (welds too rough, ring too large)
Build at least 3 prototypes with different ring sizes before committing to a final design. The sweet spot is narrow.
